Our Neighborhood Hawk

 Good morning,

Today's images are courtesy of our daughter, Catherine.  She stopped her car down the street from our home and took these images of a hawk who had lunch in his mouth.  Sadly, the image quickly taken with her phone camera is not better quality, but we can tell you that the hawk enjoyed garter snake as his main course.

This is the same image before I cropped and zoomed it.

The day before I saw this bird or one of his close relatives sitting at the end of our porch when I went out of our front door to toss the previous day's bread to the birds.   We were both surprised to see each other and his first reaction was to spread his wings, then he flew away.  I was amazed at how big they are!   Unfortunately, I didn't have my phone camera in my hand at the time so missed that shot.

Wildlife in the city!

We had a hawk that came year after year in early spring, and eventually I had to remove the bird feeder for the weeks she was there. I know we all must eat, but I didn't want the little songbirds being a snack if it could be avoided! This hawk was quite bold and would sit in a little mimosa tree and just give an "I'm not budging" look.

It is amazing to see such big birds in the neighbourhood!

We have to be careful here, too, Holly. When we bring home a new puppy we don't let him/her out alone in our fenced yard. Some years ago we had a hawk circling whenever our puppy was out. Eventually, the dog got big enough not to be in danger. On another note, a neighbor fed birds in her back yard that backed up to our back yard. We could see the hawks circling, and sometimes they brought their prey into our back yard to consume them. It was heartbreaking to watch. On a much more positive note, we have no field mice in the neighborhood!

When we brought home our puppy, had to be afraid of both the turkey vultures and eagles. Janice
