Lunch at Cabana on the River

Good morning,

This is a nice spot on the Ohio River just West of Cincinnati where you can enjoy the view and good food.  Yes, those are plastic palm trees. ;) 

So many choices!

  OK - I know what I want.  :)

 This is a Norwegian Salmon Sandwich.  Oh, yes, this is GOOD!

 

  The views are good, too.

Driving into Downtown Cincinnati

Good morning,

We're out and about again.  This time we're driving through downtown Cincinnati on our way to the West Side of town.

It's hard to see in this image, but far to the right beyond the Greyhound sign is new construction for a casino.  That's quite a statement for Cincinnati.

 The twin buildings just left of Center are the World Headquarters of Procter and Gamble.  It's hard to drive through Cincinnati without seeing them.  :) 

 P&G has been wonderful for Cincinnati and is a good corporate citizen.

 And, now we're on our way to the West Side.  That railroad bridge connects with the train center of Cincinnati which used to be Union Terminal, now a Museum.

Tomorrow I'll have pictures from our lunch beside the Ohio River.

Norwegian Meat Cakes and Brown Sauce and Cabbage and More Cabbage

Good morning,

We've been home from the sea for about three weeks now so we have been busy in the kitchen.  We both like to cook so we take turns making all that wonderful comfort food that we love to make at home.  Above is my red cabbage.  I published my recipe for it earlier - click here.

I served the red cabbage with Norwegian Meat Cakes.  I just searched to see if I had published my recipe for the meat cakes before and it appears I haven't.  So, here it is:

(My) Norwegian Meat Cakes

Ingredients:
2 pounds of lean ground beef
2 eggs
1 t nutmeg
3 T potato starch (or 3 T of bread crumbs if potato starch not available)
1 medium onion diced
1 T minced garlic (optional)
1 1/2 t black pepper (or to taste)
2 t salt (or to taste)

Directions:
Combine ingredients in large bowl and mix thoroughly.
Form into golf ball size balls slightly flattened and place in skillet over medium heat.
Fry on both sides until cooked through and browned lightly on the outside.
Serve warm with potatoes (boiled if serving in Norway or mashed if you prefer), brown sauce, green peas, red cabbage, and cranberry sauce.

Brown Sauce:

Using drippings in skillet used for meat cakes, add water and flour and stir continuously to make gravy.  Add salt and pepper to taste.

This cabbage and lamb was made by My Honey for a different meal.  Ohhh, this is good.  It's quite simple, smells wonderful cooking in the crock pot all day, and is even better the second day.  Serve with potatoes, of course. 

Cabbage and Lamb Recipe:

Ingredients:
Cabbage
Lamb (one lamb leg cut to stew size pieces)
1/4 Cup Pepper Corns (use cheesecloth bag and remove before serving if you don't want surprises when you eat)
salt to taste (in our house we only add salt at the table)

Directions:
Place ingredients in crock pot in layers of cabbage, lamb, cabbage, lamb, etc.  Place the cheesecloth bag of peppercorns on a middle layer.  Barely cover with water, set crock pot temperature on high in the morning and go enjoy your day.  Serve at dinner time, save any left overs for tomorrow.  :)

Boat Launch at Fernbank Park

Good morning,

Here are a few more images from our recent trip to Fernbank Park west of Cincinnati.

Many, many years ago I helped friends launch their small pleasure boat into the Ohio River here.

My Honey and I walked all the way down to the river - that's him down there ahead of me.

That old piece of drift wood wouldn't be fun to hit in the water with your boat propeller.

What a gorgeous day beside the Ohio River.

 The ramp obviously needs some repairs, but I imagine it is still being used.

Grandparents Day Pizza

Good morning,

Last Sunday was Grandparents Day and we were honored to be recognized by the grandchildren with a dinner at our favorite pizza restaurant, LaRosa's.

We were all to meet there at 6 PM.  Grandpa and I arrived a few minutes early so before I walked in the door I mentioned to him that I'll call to see how everyone was doing getting there and if we should go in and reserve a table/s.  A gentleman coming out of the restaurant heard what I said and suggested we go in and get in line because there was a big line of people waiting to be seated in there....

We went in the door and discovered the big line of people was our family.  ;))))

There were eleven of us and the restaurant was kind enough to put tables together so we could all sit around one very large table.

 Four huge pizzas and three 2-liter bottles of soft drinks did the trick.

 This is absolutely the best place for pizza.  :)

 Oh, yes...

 ...this is great stuff.

Grandparents day is so cool!

Ducks and Geese at Eden Park - Cincinnati, USA

Good morning,

Cincinnati's Eden Park had been invaded by Canada Geese and Mallard Ducks when we stopped by a few days ago.

This little fellow was there with his mom.  He got into tossing bread to the geese and ducks and had no fear when the birds rushed him for more.

Here they come bringing even more friends.

Yum!  Why do I see a Charles Dickens Christmas story here....

The geese even allowed a few ducks to hang with them.

 Some of them even stopped over for a portrait or two.

 Am I handsome or what?

Needlework Update - September, 2012

Good morning,

Here it is another month and time for another Needlework Update again.  I have been traveling, but that hasn't kept me from knitting and crocheting.  ;)  Above is a set of six luggage ID tags.  These have been spoken for, but I have others in our on line store.

Octopus!  I made these five critters for a friend who has five grandchildren.  :)  These are also available in the store.

More large (fits a man's hands, too) double thick pot holders available in wheat (above) and green...

...and some wine bottle covers.

 This little puppy sweater (Boys size 4-6) was in the store, but has been sold and shipped.

 "My Little Sailboat" sweater is in the store at this writing.

 I've been playing around developing bear and puppy faces.  The one on the right went with...

 ...this special order puppy sweater (a smaller size than the one in the earlier image above), hat, toy set in size 12 months that has also been sold and shipped. 

 And, here is something new in the shop. This one is so precious and has to be held in your hands to truly appreciate it.  The flower basket is a pocket, the flower on the sweater has a bee and the flower on the hat has a butterfly.  And, you can't miss the lady bug buttons.  ;)  This is a perfect outfit for baby's photo shoot!  This set is size 12 months.

So, that's what I have made this month.  I wish I could knit and crochet as fast as I think of new things to make.  :)

Also just in the shop are seam rippers with turned wood handles made by My Honey.  I'll have images of them in the next needlework update next month, but you can see them in the shop now.  :)
