Expensive Toys in St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies

Good morning,

Above is an expensive toy anchored off St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies.

The overcast day and my position on Deck 12 of Freedom of the Seas docked in St. Maarten gave me an excellent view of this beautiful sailboat.
I walked to the back of Freedom and captured this image of a privately owned four mast sail boat.

To the right in this image, you see the red roof of the water taxi dock featured in an earlier post (here) when I took the water taxi to Philipsburg (images here) across the bay with our daughter, Catherine, and Aunt Carol last September.
This is a zoomed image of Philipsburg taken from Deck 12 of Freedom of the Seas.

I had my baby camera, a Canon PowerShot SX 210IS while taking this walk on the deck.  I didn't go out to take the images, they were just there for me while I was walking.  Although we have a number of bigger Canon cameras, I am so happy to have the little PowerShot tucked into my pocket wherever I go just to capture these image opportunities.

Very best,
Lois

More Freedom Artwork

Good morning,

As I walk around Freedom of the Seas I generally have my baby Canon camera in my pocket.

The art work above is in the hallway just outside our stateroom.  Although I pass it several times a day and and have stopped to look at it before, I haven't taken a picture of it until now.  These are shadow boxes of three dimensional artwork.  So very pretty.
Down on Deck 4, this carved wood ship's figurehead is mounted on the wall in the Schooner Bar.
And, this beautiful design of butterflies is in a forward stairwell.

The entire ship is a museum of artwork.

I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoy being here with these beautiful pieces.

Very best,
Lois

Pot Holders - Crochet

Good morning,

I made these two sets of pot holders and gave them as gifts.  I keep some around at home to use as hostess gifts, too.
This is the first project I always use when teaching someone, especially children to crochet.  I like the fact that it is a quick and easy pattern to make and it results in something we can all use.

You've probably made these many times yourself, but if you'd like the pattern one more time, mine is below.  ;)

Best,
Lois

Freedom of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas in Cozumel, Mexico

Good morning,

When we pulled into Cozumel, Mexico, aboard Freedom of the Seas I saw another Royal Caribbean ship, Voyager of the Seas was docked next to us.  How fun it was to be able to get images of them together!
This image was taken from Deck 4, Freedom of the Seas.
I went down on the dock to take more images...
...and got some very good pictures on this sunny Mexican day.
Freedom is on the left, Voyager is on the right in the above image.  I remember when Voyager entered service in 1999 it was the largest cruise ship in the world.
Freedom took that "largest ship in the world" title when she was launched in 2006, but she lost that title to Oasis of the Seas in 2009.
That walkway over the side of Freedom is where I was standing when I took the first two images above.
Later in the day I took more pictures.  The sun was no longer shining into the ship canyon formed by the two ships along side each other.
Guests were returning to both ships after a beautiful day ashore.
Crew members also enjoy seeing other ships in the fleet where they have worked and/or have friends aboard.
This image is fun.  It is a reflection of Voyager in Freedom's dining room window.  The lace pattern is formed by the curtains on the inside of the window.
I took a walk up to deck 12 of Freedom to get this shot of Voyager.
Voyager on the left;  Freedom under my feet.  ;)
This is Voyager's Viking Crown Lounge, a signature part of every Royal Caribbean ship.
I walked forward again to get a picture of the bow and helipad of Voyager with Cozumel, Mexico, beyond.
Looking straight across from midships, this is a zoomed image of Voyager's Sky Bar on the Pool Deck.
If you are afraid of heights, don't look down here.  This is the view straight down between the ships from deck 12 of Freedom.  Those are guests returning and security officers preparing for departure.

Constant cleaning.  Here the dining room windows of Voyager are being cleaned with the help of very long poles.
The final image is of this old gentleman walking the deck of Voyager.  He looks as if he has spent a great deal of time at sea.  I wonder what tales he could tell.

I hope you've enjoyed the images of these two beautiful ships side by side.

Perhaps I'll see you at sea some day.

Best,
Lois

Shells Dish Cloth - Crochet

Good morning,

Here's a classic that I've made many times.  It's a little too "open" to be a heavy duty pot holder, but I often use these for pan handles that don't need a lots of padding to be moved.  In addition to dish cloths these can be also be used as pads under warm dishes.   I am sure I have used them for all three purposes over the years.

This is a great "teacher" pattern for a project with someone who wants to learn to crochet, especially the kids who may be home for a snow day.  It's quick, relatively easy, and makes an item great for them to use themselves or give as gifts.  I've made several sets of these this year to use as hostess gifts, too.  I have another teaching pattern coming, too, as soon as it is finished and photographed.  ;)

The pattern is below if you'd like to make some.

Very best,
Lois
