This batch of bread is a little different from most. I used cottage cheese and brown sugar to produce a very soft, sweet bread.
Adding a milk product to the bread creates the soft, richness of my bread.
Yum!

About three times a week I make bread. Above is how the dough looks after the first rise in the oven with just the oven light turned on for a little heat. I make bread in batches for two loaves at a time.
I use what I find available when I make bread. This batch is brown sugar and sour cream so is very rich and soft.Oh, this is good!
Enjoy,
Lois
At least three times a week I make fresh bread. The house smells awesome!
It's the little things that make life special, isn't it....
What do you like to bake that is special for your family?
Enjoy,
Lois
Our little hydroponic garden is thriving in our library. We are enjoying the fruits of our labor while cooking, too!
Yesterday I made an herb bread with basil, rosemary, parsley, olive oil, and brown sugar. I finely chopped a cup of herbs for two large loaves of bread. I probably could have used more. I used King Arthur flour. Oh, goodness, this is fantastic! I was tempted to put a little garlic in it, too, but decided to just stay with herbs we had grown this time to see how it turned out. This was a winner!
Do you like to experiment in the kitchen? I love experimenting, especially with bread!
All the best,
Lois
When I took this batch of bread dough out of the oven after the first rise (no heat for first rise, just oven light turned on), and prepared to knead it once again, I noticed he was smiling at me.
Yes, he was quite happy!
That batch of sourdough made two gorgeous, delicious loaves of bread! It is good to have happy sourdough.

Kjell and I shared the kitchen for most of the day yesterday.
We had a great dinner of Kjell's home made Split Pea with Ham Soup and my home made Whole Wheat made with Brown Sugar bread.
Of course, the ham bone from Catherine's marvelous ham dinner flavored the soup along with chunks of very tender ham. And, the whole wheat brown sugar bread rose perfectly to the occasion.Win-Win!
Sorry I can't share samples here on the blog.
All the best,
Lois
While waiting for the snow to start falling yesterday, I made two loaves of bread. Above you see the dough after the first rise. I had just taken it out of the oven where I let it rise with only the oven light turned on. I was preparing to knead it once again, and place it into two bread pans to wait for the second rise.
Here it is after the second rise in the oven with just the light turned on... ...before turning the oven on at 350F for 45 minutes to produce two big beautiful loaves. Here they are on the cooling rack.Should we lose power tomorrow, I've made bread to get us through the next couple of days. Hopefully, though, we'll keep our power and everyone will stay warm and safe.
All the very best,
Lois
Yesterday was whole wheat bread making day. These are the first two loaves of 2026.
My goodness, the house smelled good when I took them out of the oven.
All the best,
Lois
Here are the first two loaves of bread made with the sourdough starter that our granddaughter, Anna, brought to me from Alaska.
This is not pure sourdough bread because I wanted sandwich loaves. I added some sour cream to produce the smooth texture and a rich taste.
I sliced off the heel of the bread to take a picture and didn't do a very good job of making a smooth cut. Anyway, it tastes even better than it looks!I'm still feeding the sourdough for many more batches of bread.
Thank you, Anna, from bringing the sourdough starter!
Love,
Granny E. (aka Lois)
A few days ago I told you about the sourdough culture that our granddaughter, Anna, brought me from Alaska.
Well, for the past few days I've been growing that good stuff and am almost ready to make bread out of it. This is how it looked last night. It's getting all foamy and smells great.
I think today just may be a bread day!

Our granddaughter, Anna, stopped by with something very special for me!
Anna and a friend had visited Alaska and when she saw this, she knew it was for me! As my regular readers know, I make bread often and, until recently, made sourdough bread. The sourdough I used was started here in Cincinnati so had a very good, local flavor.
It will be fun to revive this Alaskan sourdough and make bread with it!
Thank you, Anna!
More to come. :)

Ah, yes. Warm homemade bread on a cold day. This one is Light Whole Wheat.
I wish I could share the aroma with you!

These are just out of the oven.
Today's bread is whole wheat.
So good!
What are you making, baking, growing today?
All the best,
Lois
There is nothing like home made bread. It makes the house smell so wonderful while baking, and eating it, especially while still warm out of the oven, is fantastic.
The bread was still so warm and soft, it was hard to cut. This corned beef and cheese with mustard sandwich was fabulous.
If you're interested, I've published many bread recipes here.
Yum!

The house smells wonderful again today.
Today's bread is Whole Wheat with Sour Cream. The sour cream in the recipe gives the bread a wonderful smooth texture.

I made breakfast bread again, while also making two large loaves of sandwich bread. It's easiest to make a big batch of dough, then use it for different purposes.
Above you see the bread finished and sliced to enjoy.
...put a similar size piece of dough on top, folded it together, and placed in into the bowl for baking.
Here's a previous post which gets all of this into a comprehensive order so you can make this yourself if you would like to do so.
Enjoy!
Lois
