Time Travel at Toensberg Museum

Good morning,

Here are a few images of the Time Travel depicted in the Toensberg Museum.

Early pioneers in the development of Norway...

...through World War II...

 ...to the modern day.

 The Toensberg Viking and Whaling Museum is a "must" for any visit to the area.  Plan to spend at least a couple of hours here.

Tomorrow we will climb the mountain to Slottsfjellet, the fortress at the top of the mountain.

Seaman's Chest

Good morning,

This seaman's chest is in the Whaling Museum in Toensberg, Norway.

These chests held the possessions of a seaman and stayed on board when he went home on vacation, sometimes once a year or year and a half.  When he returned, items he needed on board would be waiting for him.

Many present day seamen have similar chests for the same use, but they rarely decorate them as beautifully as the chests of years gone by.

Whaling Guns - Toensberg, Norway

Good morning,

Although it is no longer politically correct to eat whales in many parts of the world today, whales provided a source of food, fuel, clothing, and much more.  Even the bones of whales were used by people in Scandinavia to stay alive.  Without the hunting of whales, survival would not have been possible.

Until the whaling gun was invented in Toensberg, Norway, whalers used spears.

The Viking and Whaling Museum in Norway provides an excellent history of the times when whales provided life for the people in the cold North.

Whaling Museum - Toensberg, Norway

Good morning,

This is a return visit to the Toensberg, Norway, Whaling Museum. 

Of course, we took pictures earlier times we were here, too, but our cameras weren't as good as the cameras we have now.

You can get an idea of size of these creatures by comparison with that handsome man who shows up in so many of my pictures.

Did you know there are "fingers" inside the fins of whales?

I took pictures of the signs which explain the exhibits much better than I could ever explain them.

 These animals are huge.  Back in the Viking and later times, they provided meat, fuel, and so much more for the people of Scandinavia.

 What a fascinating place!

Viking Timeline

Good morning,

There's a room in the Viking Museum in Toensberg, Norway, that puts the Viking era into perspective.  We could have spent a couple of hours here.

These intelligent, strong people were leaders in building and sailing ships and they had a very developed society at home.

Viking relics continue to be found as construction continues for new buildings.

Please note:  Vikings did NOT have horns on their helmets.

Viking Textiles - Toensberg, Norway

Good morning,

In the Viking Museum in Toensberg, Norway, I especially enjoyed the displays about textiles from the Viking era.

I'm sorry this didn't come out better.  The museum was quite dark and I was using flash.

How elegant!

 This is a model reconstruction of the Slottsfjellet at the top of the mountain behind the museums.

It was fun to imagine the people who lived here, the lives they lived, and the clothing that they wore.

Viking Ship Museum - Toensberg, Norway

Good morning,

Today's images were taken inside the Viking Museum in Toensberg, Norway.

Toensberg is known to be the oldest town in Norway and the launching point for many Viking journeys. 

This ship was found buried here. It provided a great deal of information about the construction of the old ships.

This is a model of the original ship.

Walk to The Viking and Whaling Museums

Good morning,

We walked from the Toensberg Shopping Mall (yesterday's post) to the Viking and Whaling Museums.  That's one of the wonderful things about Toensberg:  we were able to walk from our hotel and see so many different things.

We walked through the old streets...

...and, looking down one of the side streets could see Slottsfjellet.  This could be seen from Oslo Fjord when we sailed into the fjord on our way to Oslo, 60 miles to the North.  More image to come of Slottsfjellet.

The Viking and Whaling Museums are adjacent to each other in connecting buildings.

We have been here before, but it is fun to be back and see some changes.

 There is now an area where meetings and events can be held.

 This beautiful old piano could use a matching piano bench.  ;)

 Sadly, someone had left a drink glass on the piano.

There is a great deal to see here.  More of the museums and the climb to Slottsfjellet in posts to come.
