More About Viking Ships in Norway

Good morning,

Today's images are a few more of those from our trip to Norway in June.  We were living at a hotel on the dockside of Vestfjord where you can see reproductions of Viking ships and even take tours in them.
Several additional ships are being built in the same way as the originals.
Modern Vikings are here to explain how the ships are being built, where they have and will sail, and about the lives of Vikings.

The entire project is being done by volunteers.
The people come at different times of the day and different days of the week to work on the ships in their areas of specialty.
There's that handsome man again who shows up in so many of my pictures.
Huge logs are split as they were in Viking times.
The "steering board" handle is being shaped here.
All of these supplies and the construction are where anyone can walk up and see them.
Boards are straightened in the original way.

Oh, my.  We had to ask about this!  Real Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets.  We had to ask the people how that got here!  The response?  An American tourist brought it over and gave it to them.  Go figure.

Tools of the trade - the same as the original Vikings used.
Beautiful woodworking!  And, what's fun is the prop that is holding it up is a laptop computer.  ;)
There are more Norway pictures coming.  I hope you are enjoying them.

All the best,
Lois

A fascinating bit of history for me as my husband just had his DNA tested only to find the majority of DNA from Norway. A huge surprise for his family!
