Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio

Good morning,

On a beautiful, sunny day My Honey and I paid a visit to Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The cemetery is about ten minutes from our home by car and we pass it regularly.  Today we stopped in to enjoy this beautiful place.
This is a very old section of the cemetery and many of the names are easily recognizable.  McAlpin's Department Store was on Fourth Street in Downtown Cincinnati until about twenty years ago.
There are huge monuments in this section and some very small monuments.
The sheer size of the monuments is awesome.  The arrangement is a large monument bearing the patriarch's name with smaller stones with family members around it.
The grounds of the cemetery include beautiful lakes and trees.
It's hard to read the name Fleischmann above the door.  If you have baked bread at home, you have probably used yeast made by the Fleischmann company.  I went to the door and peered through the iron bars.  I could see gold chalices and leaded glass windows inside.  Just beautiful.

Spring Grove Cemetery is the second largest cemetery in the United States.  The largest cemetery is Arlington Memorial Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

We spent a couple of hours here taking pictures and I have many more to share with you.
I'll share some of the more unusual tombstones and memorials in another post.  Some very famous people are buried here, too, including Johnny Appleseed.

We have visited several Civil War battlefields and cemeteries and have learned a great deal about the people who fought and died in the American Civil War.  Most of the burials in the section of the cemetery in the images I have here today were before that war.

Do you sometimes visit cemeteries and to read and learn about people buried there?

Best,
Lois

I love cemeteries, especially the old ones with landscaping and big monuments. You spot some locally famous names on the bigger monuments.

I love taking pictures of cemeteries. I post a few pictures now and again. In fact I do have some from our trip to Texas last May that I've forgotten about.

I love cemeteries. My mom has told me about Spring Grove and even suggested that we take a trip to Cincy to see it. Not really unreasonable since I went all the way to Paris to see Pere LeChaise. Anyway, in Columbus, we have Greenlawn Cemetery, final resting spot of James Thurber and many other notables. Your pictures remind me of Greenlawn. It is also a registered bird sanctuary, so you often run into bird watchers there. Will have to go there one of these days and take some pictures!

Such a lovely, peaceful cemetery. Thank you for sharing your visit there with us. Those large trees are gorgeous. Very interesting to learn about the various, well-known people buried there. I look forward to future posts.

Hope you have a nice day.

What a beautiful cemetary. We may sound a little odd, but I love to look at the old monuments. A great honor to those who went before us.

This Cemetery looks very similar to the one where Bob's Aunt was buried in Springfield, Ohio. It's another huge, old Cemetery and is equally as beautiful. The trees there are massive and old. I love old Cemetaries and will drive through one when I get the chance. I visited the Cemetery and took pictures of the Cemetery in Georgetown - it's very old and the headstones are amazing. Thanks so much for sharing! Will look forward to seeing the older headstones, they are my favorite. Please check by my last post, I have an award for you...debbie

Most of our cemeteries, even the historical ones, are so 'crowded' that it is not easy to see some green around. This is a wonderful park, with beautiful views and majestic tombs.

yes I do....specially small country ones. When I am out and about, specially in Europe, I always stop at local war memorials and read a few names, its the least I can do.

I think it is weird, but I sort of enjoy visiting cemeteries; while at the same time I feel sadness creep in. Specially when I see little babies or young children's graves.

Cemeteries can reveal a lot about the history of a town. Love that stone bridge!

Oh I love cemeteries. There is one that my husband and I used to visit often. It is the oldest in the county and you can really tell.
My gosh Lois can you imagine the cost of some of those memorials in your photos?! It is a gorgeous cemetery.
I'd like to see more.
Love Di ♥
