Birthplace of President Ulysses S. Grant

Good morning,

Just off of U.S. Route 52 at Point Pleasant, Ohio, is the humble home where Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822.

He went on to attend West Point, serve as President Lincoln's General in the Civil War, then become President of the United States.

This is a return visit to Grant's birthplace on our recent mini road trip through Ohio.  We also stopped here was in 2005.  Click here to see my images of the inside of the home.
This church is just up the hill from his home...
...and this is the view of the small home while walking down the hill from the church.
It's amazing it took all the way to 1998 before this was listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
There is that handsome man with a camera up there.  That man turns up just about everywhere I go.
It is great to be a tourist during the week.  Not much traffic or people to dodge while shooting pictures.
This bronze sign was here before, but...
...the one above and the next two were not here.
The sign above explains history of the birthplace home itself and how it was moved around the country and put on exhibit.  Eventually, the people of Point Pleasant, with the help of an area judge who championed the idea, had the home returned and placed on its original foundation.  I visited this place many times as a child and never knew the story about the house and its travels until now.
This is the small Grant Memorial Bridge across Indian Creek.  Just a few yards to the right, Indian Creek flows into the mighty Ohio River.
And, this Civil War era cannon protects the beautiful green park surrounding the first home of our Eighteenth President of the United States (1869-1877), Ulysses S. Grant.

Click here for a fascinating biography of President Grant.  It details the political culture of his times and his determination to carry on the equal rights of all US citizens begun by President Abraham Lincoln.

Interesting tour. Reminds me of the tour to Lincoln's log cabin.

Maybe one of these days on my annual trek South, I will take time to enjoy the places I never see. My vision of the country is 80 mph along interstate highways with loops around Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, straight through Nashville and Birmingham, and points south! One thing I do enjoy at those speeds is seeing spring come alive as I drive South, the dogwood blooms in the woods are beautiful, especially when there is still snow on the ground when I left home! You've made me see Ohio is much more than big cities!

Very interesting Post, Lois. I know so little of Ulysses S. Grant, other than he was a Civil War General and then President. Thank you for sparking my interest to learn more.

Thanks Lois for the continuing history lesson. You are so right that being a tourist mid-week is the best time - no other crowds of tourists to get in your way!

US Grant may not have been that great a president, I don't know, but he was certainly a great general. Interesting how some great people came from very humble beginnings.
