As soon as we passed Jacksonville, Florida (see yesterday's post), the rain began.
We debated whether we would stop at Viera Wetlands to see if we could get a few pictures.
When we got there, there was a steady drizzle of rain and we found that all but one of the sections (ponds) were very low on water.
Many of the birds didn't mind at all since the lower water allowed them to find goodies to eat on the bottom more easily.
Can you see that little critter out there?
Yes, that's a little alligator in the middle of many raindrops. I rather like these shots.
We were glad the gate was open so we could drive through the wetlands this time. The rain would not have been good for our cameras.

We got back on the highway just before more rain started. Look carefully up ahead to see a wall of rain waiting for us.
Soon we arrived in Vero Beach, our stop for the night, checked into our hotel, then went over to the mall for a little shopping. Although the sky was overcast, we were very fortunate that the rain had stopped long enough for us to get in and out of the stores without being soaked.

I must someday get husband to take me down to Florida to see those wetlands. Lois, what's the best time of year to go there?

Hi Mona,
We have been there at different times of the year and I guess there was the most to see in the Spring. However, Viera Wetlands is man made from treated sewage water and the pond/section levels are controlled. Of course, the level of the water has a great deal to do with what you can see and photograph. We usually stay there two nights in a row to visit in the late afternoon/evening, then earlier the next day. We have always found something interesting to photograph there.
I highly recommend the Hampton Inn, Melbourne-Viera. There are two Melbourne Hamptons so it is the Viera property that is closest to the wetlands.

It is odd seeing low water levels. People in my community in Naples say there has been so much rain the ponds are overflowing.
You got some lovely shot, even with the rain. Sometimes a rainy day can give you more interesting shots than a sunny day.
A nice cool rain would be nice right about now!
