The ivy ate my car!

Good morning,

This is ivy on a tree in my back yard.
And, so is this.
Did you ever wonder if the ivy holds up the tree or if the tree holds up the ivy?
This tree is in the neighbor's yard, just behind our garage.  That small white urn is on the top of one side of our detached two car garage at the back of our property and the house on the left about 60 feet beyond the tree is three stories tall.  That will give you an idea of the size of the tree and the amount of ivy up there!  The tree is at least 80 feet tall.

About 20 years ago the limb on that tree that extended across our garage came down and completely covered the garage with our son's car inside.  Can you imagine that excuse to the high school teacher?  "I can't come to school today because I can't find my car under a whole bunch of vines...." Yeah, right.

I see lots of firewood up there!

All the best,
Lois

Cute title, Lois. So interesting to see vines with growth like that. We do NOT have that problem here in Arizona!

I often wondered if the ivy smothers the tree...but as I can see here..it does not hurt them at all!

That's some gorgeous Ivy. It's the only thing I can grow. I have such a black thumb.

Ivy can be quite invasive, Lois. I removed it from a pecan tree in front of our house when we first moved here and also caught a dose of poisin ivy in the process. Now both the ivy - all tyoes - and the tree are gone!

Ivy is beautiful to see but can be so destructive, consuming whole buildings. I'm sure some of the old barns I've seen covered with ivy are being held up by the ivy. Trees can only support so much too. That's one problem we don't have here in Alaska.

Ivy can be so pretty, but if left to its own devices it can be extremely invasive as your photos show, Lois.
