Good morning,
These are a few more images from our trip to Metamora, Indiana, a little town built on the Whitewater Canal.
Most of the town's buildings are now gift shops and restaurants.
You can take a ride on The Ben Franklin III, a canal boat that is pulled by horses.
There's that handsome man who appears in so many of my pictures. ;) The railroad tracks run parallel to the canal.
Across the street from the railroad tracks are more stores and restaurants.
The ducks on the canal are a part of the attractions. You can purchase corn to feed them and everyone wins. The ducks get fed, visitors have fun feeding the ducks, the merchants sell corn. :)
Train rides are also available, but not the day we were there. That's OK, we'll come back again.

The Whitewater Canal bankrupted the state of Indiana back when it was built in the late 1830's to late 1840's, and was the driving force for a state Constitutional amendment for never going into debt (again).
We've been to Metamora, and I'm glad a little piece of this Civil Engineering history is still preserved.

This little town reminds me of one in Illinois except for the canal. It looks very cute and I love that bank building! Love Di ♥

RE: Beth's post about the bankruptcy-The Mammoth Improvement Act, which funded the intitial work on the Whitewater Canal, also involved other canals in the state, railroads and road building. It wasn't the Whitewater Canal alone that created the bankruptcy but period of national recession and the culmination of all the projects. But that did lead Indiana to take the position that the state would not go into debt. EG Camera Girl-yes it is muddy but it was named for the river that feeds it, The Whitewater River, not the character of its water.
