Good morning,
Last Saturday night, July 4, we enjoyed watching A Capitol Fourth on our local educational TV station, WCET. In the past we watched this every year, and after attending Red, White, and Boom, with the Cincinnati Pops at their summer home at Riverbend (no performance this year due to Covid-19), would watch the instant replay of A Capitol Fourth when we got home.
Every year until his death in 2009 our Cincinnati Pops Conductor, Erich Kunzel, conducted the National Symphony for this event in Washington, DC. Our CPO assistant conductor would conduct the local Independence Day performances. We were so fortunate to have hours of fabulous entertainment on the Fourth of July.
This year was different, of course. Early in the evening we watched the President's spectacular Independence Day events live in Washington. Later, A Capitol Fourth was broadcast with many recently made segments of musicians properly socially distant. Also included were recordings from previous years of the National Symphony, Military Musicians, and, of course, fireworks.
John Philip Sousa's inspiring music was featured throughout.
And, as is traditional, the finale was the 1812 Overture complete with fireworks perfectly timed to the music.
Wow! What a fabulous Fourth! It was so wonderful to be able to enjoy it all from our living room
where we were very socially distant from Covid-19. We were also able to be home with our four Labrador Retrievers who handled well the worst residential neighborhood noise we have ever had in 41 years here.
Wherever you are, I hope all USA citizens and friends enjoyed the celebrations last weekend!
All the best,
Lois
Looks like a splendid program. Sorry I missed it.
ReplyDeleteI too watched the Capital Fourth and found it underwhelming. It seemed too stilted. Then I recalled that Bloomberg TV was carrying the Boston Pops from a previous year. Yes, I am a Massachusetts native now in Florida, but it was so much peppier. It just seemed live. I wish you could have seen it!
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, We get Bloomberg TV so probably could have seen the Boston Pops. Our former Assistant Conductor is Keith Lockhart who you surely know. :)
