The Viking Wood Carver

Good morning,

We stopped by the site of the building of the Viking Ship replica next to our hotel in Toensberg, Norway, often during the week we were there.
All of the pieces of the Viking Ship that are being built are being made by hand as were those for the original ships.  This present day Viking is making the piece that will hold the rudder, or "steering board."  Incidentally, the word "starboard" for the right side of a ship comes from "steering board" of Viking times.
Other wood carvings are on display...
...as well as a tremendous amount of information about the projects.
Viking women were present preparing food for the people doing the work.

It was fascinating to stop by at different times of the week and different times of the day to see the many volunteers working on the Viking Ship project.  We couldn't have been living in a more convenient spot in the green hotel you see in the background in these pictures.

More Viking Ship pictures to come....

  2. That is an excellent craft. There's a blog, Alaska Nitty Gritty that posts a lot of totem poles that are similar.
