Civil War Encampment - Reenactment at Bardstown, Kentucky

Good morning,

While we were at the Civil War Battle Reenactment site last August in Bardstown, Kentucky, we met some of the participants who invited us to walk through their encampment to see how they were living.  There were very few modern conveniences here.

Children and pets were here helping to prepare for the day and for the battle that would occur later in the afternoon.
The row of tents is along a small stream exactly where there was an encampment during the Civil War in the 1860's.

Modern things truly "stuck out" in the scene, such as the large blue plastic box in the foreground.  Some of the participants were arriving for the day and unloading their vehicles.  Others had been living here in the tents.
Food was prepared the old fashioned way.
We enjoyed meeting this couple.  The lady was born in France, married an American, and is now participating in this living history.
You'll note uniforms of both the North and the South here.  Everyone gets along here until it's time for the reenactment, then they become "enemies" for the performance.

This trip was rich in images that jumped into my camera.  I'll have more coming of the people and the battle.

All the best,
Lois

  2. Those people must be very brave to camp like that! I remember many years ago tent camping. I don't think I'd do it again now, LOL!! They must be very devoted to the reenactment!
And you're right Lois, the blue tub really does stick out there!!
    Love Di ♥

  3. I don't understand why folks want to participate in these reenactments, but we have a good friend who does it all the time and loves it!

  5. Lois, I have never attended one of these re-enactments, but we have known folks who participated in them quite avidly. Like Ricki commented, I don't quite understand why folks do these since the war's outcome is already history.

  6. Hi Everyone,

Maple Lane, we have stayed often at the Hampton Inn Kennesaw so we know your area. We have also enjoyed meetings at Callaway Gardens in your area. What a gorgeous place, especially the azaleas.

Beatrice, the South won this battle. After all, we were in Bardstown, Kentucky. ;)

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by and for your kind comments.

    Best,
    Lois

  7. Reenactments are a lot of fun, and they also make you realize the hardship felt by the folks who lived in that era. Thank goodness for them that we live like we do...debbie

  10. Reenactments certainly help to understand the human side of the equation during the civil war. It was not an easy life.

  11. Great photos Lois! Living near Gettysburg, PA, there are always reenactments in and around the area. I have not been to one in a while though.

    They are fun to attend.

  12. Great images, Lois, and you must have been very happy to get that invitation to visit the camp. Re-enactments are wonderful for getting people (and especially children) to understand history.
