Indiana Farm

Good morning,

This beautiful old farm is located in Southern Indiana.  A large barn is on the other side of the outbuildings.  I believe the small building closest to the house is probably a cook house.

Such a pretty place.  I am sure there is a great deal of history here.

All the best,
Lois

  1. Oh! Wouldn't you just love to walk through there and know the history behind it? I had to laugh when I saw this picture!!! When I was on my drive South last month, I would pass similar looking places and immediately think, "Now Lois would stop and grab a couple of pictures of that place!"

  6. Lois, I've always wondered about the "cook houses" ween on many older farms. I've never actually been in one, but always curious as to the setup and if all the cooking of meals was done there. Sure would be one way not to have food odors in the main house, but where would the fun be in that?

  9. Hi Everyone,

Yes, it is a beautiful farm, isn't it. Beatrice, the cook houses were separate from the main house mostly because of fire concerns. The cook houses generally have a large stone or brick fireplace/cooking space on one wall of the building - the wall furthest from the main house. I was recently in the one at Mt. Vernon, VA, George Washington's home and at My Old Kentucky Home near Bardstown, KY, among others. They are mostly very much the same except for size. The larger estates have larger cook houses.

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by and for your kind comments.

  11. Hi Lois,

This home reminds me so much of the home my Great Great Grandfather built when he returned from the Civil War. The home was build of bricks made from clay quarried on the property in Randolph County, Indiana, and as far as I know a second cousin of my Grandmother lives in the home now.

Thank you for the lovely images from my Indiana home :-)

  13. I've seen beautiful barns in Indiana. Driving through in summer it looks as if the corn rows go on forever.

  14. It is quite a place, Lois. I think it was owned by someone meriting the name "Gentleman Farmer."

Pink bedroom? Why does Pepto Bismal come to mind?

  19. A grand farmhouse fallen on hard times. Hopefully someone may want to restore this place. I think you're right about the cookhouse. From the weather reports this coming weekend, we may need one around here. BTW, I'm your neighbor across the river in KY-Louisville.
