Good morning,
Just one image today from the Krohn Conservatory Orchid House. I'll have more from the Orchid House later, but wanted to share this one today.
We had some excitement in our garden. We live in the city across the street from a major university campus. Yesterday evening as the students were arriving for classes and the traffic was heavy we received a call from our next door neighbor telling us there were two deer in our yard. For those of you who live out in the country, that's no big deal, but in the 32 years we have lived here we have never seen deer in our yard. We do know there are a few in the last year or so not far away in a wooded area on university property. My fear is that the coyotes spotted about a mile away have moved into the wooded area and are scaring the deer out.
We didn't see the deer in person, but a review of our security cameras gave us some pretty good shots of the deer coming up our front steps, wandering through the front garden, then jumping a fence to get into the back garden. This all went on while there was heavy traffic on the other side of the hedges around the edges of our property. The deer were there for a short while before jumping another fence to move on to the next property. Our dogs didn't see them, but they had a great time tracking them after they were gone.
Now we have deer to add to the list of other critters we see here all the time: raccoons, possums, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, garden snakes, slugs and bugs, so many birds....
So, that's our excitement from Cincy Woebegone yesterday evening. :)

Deer are both a joy and a real nuisance. They are about as common as squirrels in my neighborhood. I found I cannot grow the beautiful red tulips that I love in my front yard. As soon as they are in full bloom, the deer eat them. I also opened my front door several years back and there was a deer staring back at me from less than 10 foot away. The look on its face was, "What are you doing here?" Fortunately, they don't jump fences around here. At least so far!
ReplyDeleteSo it's turning into a nature land there! My husband and I both as children lived just walking distance from our home here of 30 years, in a very rural area. We never saw any deer until about 20 years ago, then things changed and they are daily visitors now.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fun story! We had deer coming into our yard at night all winter long to eat the birdseed I put out for the birds - the deer would come in and clean up, and leave a trail of their calling cards!
ReplyDeleteWe have deer in the woods behind our house. That's why I have rosemary planted all over the place because deer do not like rosemary. I wish you could have seen them! They are fun to watch, but our Westie terrorizes them so they don't hang around very long....

ReplyDeleteThere do seem to be more deer in many areas lately. And coyotes. They are adapting to us humans.
ReplyDeletesorry you didn't get to see them in person but at least you had them on camera! i hope they don't become regulars - eating up all your yardwork! labs... such great guard dogs, right?! NOT!
ReplyDeleteHi Lois...the Orchid is a real beauty!!
ReplyDeleteOh deer(pun intended) That must be where the deer that are usually wondering my lawns and gardens have gone lol ..I haven't seen them since last fall..very unusual!!
We have coyotes to and with all the deep snow I wonder if some deer might have fallen prey to them!!
Will be watching to see what will be added next in animal park!!
very exciting!! perhaps a good thing that the dogs didn't see them.
ReplyDeleteHi Lois, We are taking the normal land the deer used for new construction. We have deer right here in the city just two blocks from downtown. My husband came in today and said their were prints all in our new garden that a neighbor planted for us. He thinks it is deer. Hopefully we will be able to get something out of the garden.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Marie
The orchid is stunning Lois! As for the deer, just think of your property as nature friendly! You have your own personal little zoo in the city! Did you get any photos?
ReplyDeleteLove Di ♥
We have lots of deer and coyotes in our area, tho the coyotes are pretty good about keeping hidden.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo of the orchid. You would have had even more excitement in your garden if the dogs would have seen the deer. We don't have deer this far north, but the moose consider our backyard as part of their turf.
ReplyDeleteNo deer here - possums at night and they are protected species so can't be 'disposed of' - friends further out have problems with 'roos tho. Your visitors must be quiet for the dogs not to notice them there

I would be excited to see the deer!
ReplyDelete...my parents, who live near Kenwood, had a mama and a baby deer in their yard. Three days later they had five deer all laying down napping! The deer may have come up from French Park for them, but who knows! It's strange...
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to have deer roaming about your garden , we have Kangaroo's that roam everywhere and sadly become traffic fatalities, which always upsets me.Thank you for popping over to my blog it'd lovely to meet you

I always worry about deer being struck by autos and trucks. Glad these got there and left without any major incidents.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see beautiful deer in your yard. I remember feeling the same when we moved into our home in Draper Utah up against the mountain. Then I realized they came to eat most of our newly planted landscaping. As the neighborhood houses started to go up, our vegetation became more safe.
ReplyDeleteBut they have the sweetest faces...
Hi Everyone,
ReplyDeleteWhen the deer came through here I am sure they were trying to avoid something/someone, not coming looking for food. They didn't stay long. I agree they were fun to see.
On their morning walks our dogs see them in the morning down near the wooded area on University property. They go nuts and daughter Catherine can hardly hang on to their leashes. I am sure they knew what they were tracking when they smelled them in the garden after that one-time visit.
I, too, worry about traffic accidents around here with the deer. Both people and deer are at risk when they are this close to traffic.
Thank you, everyone, for stopping by and for your kind comments.
Very best,
Lois
